The celebration of Easter is at the heart of the Catholic experience at Benilde-St. Margaret’s. While the campus will be closed for Good Friday and Easter Monday, students and families will gather for Mass in local parishes to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Sunday, March 31.
For two BSM students, this year’s celebration of Easter provided them with an opportunity to share their creativity and anticipation for the resurrection with the BSM community. Elaine Hughes ’25 and Abigail Marusich ‘26 produced original works of art for BSM’s Easter prayer card and greeting card.
Marusich’s painting, entitled “He is risen!,” features the risen Lord stepping out of the tomb. “I took this inspiration from thinking about how I imagine Easter morning to have been like,” Marusich explained, “I like to imagine the quiet tomb that Jesus left and the peace and stillness of that morning, but I wanted to use color in a way that emphasizes that this wasn't any ordinary morning. The yellow cross shape that Jesus stands in front of is like the morning sunrise.”
In her painting, Jesus is surrounded by some of the titles He is called in Scripture: Lamb of God, Savior, Redeemer, Prince of Peace, and Son of God, on a bright colored background. “I am excited to have my painting featured on the Easter card this year. I hope that it helps people to set the mood for the excitement of Easter and keep a focus on the Resurrection,” Marusich said.
BSM annually produces an Easter prayer card featuring one of Campus Minister Mike Jeremiah’s prayers. This year, Jeremiah’s prayer draws upon a quote from the gospel of St. Matthew (28:5-6). The front of the prayer card is graced by a painting, “Risen Lord,” by junior Elaine Hughes.
“I loved being able to be a part of BSM's celebration of Easter this year, by helping make the Easter card,” Hughes said, noting the experience has been meaningful as she soon will become Catholic.
“I was inspired to help with this because this year's Easter season has been especially important to me, as I have been a catechumen in RCIA at my parish. This year on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil I will be baptized and fully become a member of the Catholic Church. It means a lot to me, to be able to have the opportunity to have my art featured in this year's BSM celebration of Easter,” Hughes explained.
Hughes enjoys being at Benilde-St. Margaret’s and is excited to use art to express her beliefs. “I want to continue showing my love for religious studies and religious art by making art regarding the Catholic faith, and especially about Jesus, Mary, and the saints.”
The Easter prayer card, featuring Mike J’s prayer and Elaine’s painting can be downloaded and printed from this link, and Abigail’s painting can be viewed here and Elaine's painting here.
We are BSM proud of these student artists and grateful to them for sharing their creative talents. We wish all members of the BSM community a blessed and joyous Easter celebration.
