Elle Rieck ‘29, a seventh grader at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, has been perfecting her skills in competitive ice skating, a passion she has pursued since kindergarten. Six days a week, Rieck enjoys practicing after school at a local ice rink where she works on core strength, jumps, spins, edges, and her full program with assistance from her coaches.
This past September, Elle competed in the National Qualifying Series (NQS) held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Rieck placed seventh in her group after putting on a strong performance. Later in October, Elle became a gold medalist in her program for edges. Rieck shared, “I hope to continue testing up and become a double gold medalist for free skate in the near future!”
Rieck draws inspiration from Coach Caryn Kadavy, a distinguished figure in the skating world. Kadavy holds titles including the 1987 World bronze medalist and four-time US national medalist When asked who inspires her the most, Rieck responded, “Coach Caryn Kadavy has had the biggest influence on my skating journey.” Coach Kadavy works with Rieck daily to assist her in mastering techniques and plays a vital role in Rieck’s success.
The life of a competitive athlete can come with a lot of challenges, but Rieck looks to her faith to provide her comfort, especially before competitions. When feeling nervous, she prays to God to calm her down before her competitions.
Within the BSM community, Rieck is a part of the figure skating club where she one day hopes to become its captain. To Elle, the overwhelming sense of community at BSM stood out to her during her first tour of the school, making it a standout choice for her.
Rieck's accomplishments in her time as a Red Knight make us proud, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact she will undoubtedly have on the BSM community and the world of figure skating in the future!
