BSM Winter Sports in Full Swing

Whether they’re on the slope, the court, the ice, or in the pool, the competitive spirit of our Red Knights is evident. BSM sports teams are showcasing their hard work & talent as their winter seasons come along.

Alpine Ski

Alpine ski had a successful winter season with several skiers qualifying for state at the Section 5 meet at Wild Mountain. The boys' team qualified for state as the second-place team finisher. Lara DePauw '24 advanced to state as an individual. Skiers will compete at the state meet on Tuesday, February 14 at Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik.

Update: The BSM boys’ alpine ski team finished second place at the MSHSL State Meet. Diego Adair ‘23, Simon McMahon ‘24, Bennett Erickson ‘25, Ford Stoen ‘26, Rainier Gillis ‘26 and Fletcher Stoen ‘27 recorded BSM's best state ski finish since 2004.

 

Boys' Basketball

The boys' basketball program has had an impressive season with a current record of 14-3. “I have enjoyed the team atmosphere this season and am looking forward to the playoffs,” said Elliot   Huether ‘23. “We recently experienced a tough loss to a top-ranked Wisconsin team but had a   great bounce-back and win against Chanhassen. Playing competitive sports can be difficult but with a great community, the boys’ basketball team has shown that anything is possible.” Section play will begin Wednesday, March 8.

 

Girls' Basketball

The girls' basketball team is young this year with a strong group of resilient players and a tight-knit spirit. Their current record is an impressive 15-5. “We have loads of talent,” said Tim Ellefson, girl’s basketball head coach. “We are beginning to see the commitment and sacrifices needed to be champions. Stay tuned.” Section play will begin Saturday, March 11.

 

 

Dance

Coming off of their 2nd place finish in state high kick and jazz champion titles last season, the dance team is once again making history this season. Senior dance captain Gabby Nyquist ‘23 shared that “the girls are putting in the extra work to achieve our goals again" due to such a successful season   last year. Their hard work has already paid off as the dance team secured first place in jazz at their December home meet and first place in high kick in the conference championship, a feat that hasn’t been achieved in a number of years. The Knightettes will compete at sections Saturday, Feb. 11 with the hopes to proceed to State.

Update: The BSMDT will compete in the State Tournament in both Jazz and Kick Feb. 17-18.

Boys' Hockey

The boys' hockey team has had a strong season this year with an impressive record
of 12-5. The team's chemistry and hard work are noticeable both on and off the ice,
“the team is very supportive of one another, we have a very fun locker room,
everyone knows their role and is staying very positive,” said Ken Pauly, boys’ hockey head coach. “We are very grateful for the support of our students and we hope to see them at some very big games that we have coming up.” The team hopes BSM fans continue to come out to games and support their goal of winning sections and making it to the state championship! The Section 6AA tournament begins Thursday, Feb. 23.

Girls' Hockey

After graduating many senior players in the last few years, the girls' hockey team has welcomed a lot of new talent with several young players this year. “Our team has    relied on our depth throughout this season and we have seen growth on both the offensive and defensive ends,” said Kelly Pannek, girls’ hockey head coach. “The ultimate goal for this team is to walk away from our last game of the season, whenever that may be, and be able to say that we were prepared and did everything we could   to be successful on the ice.” The team encourages all Red Knights to cheer them on in the arena as they finish the last few games of their regular season.
Section 6AA Quarter Final play will begin Saturday, Feb. 11.

Update: BSM girls' hockey will move on to play in the Section Semi-finals on 2/15.

Nordic Ski

The nordic ski team has enjoyed a great winter season welcoming several new members and a combined program with De La Salle skiers. With a new schedule and team, skiers have been able   to learn from each other while also supporting each other at races and practices. “It’s been a great season,” said team captain Stella Ordahl ’23. “We've had a lot of new people join this year and it’s been great to watch them all improve with their skiing. I also think joining with the De La Salle Skiers has been so beneficial for us, our team has learned so much.” The team feels united from   daily fun at practice and bonding ski trips to Biwabik and Heartwood Resort.

Boys' Swim

The boys’ swim team has had a great season and is looking forward to sections later this month. According to senior swimmer Sam Haddad ‘23, “one of the season's highlights so far was the True Team meet, where the team placed second overall.” Scores have been close, and the Red Knights are looking to close the gap as they finish out their winter season strong. The team thanked their five seniors, Sam Haddad '23, CJ Johnson '23, Parker Roos '23, Charlie Shideman '23 and Mitchell Thueringer '23, for their continued contribution and leadership this season. Red Knight swimmers will compete in the Section 2A Tournament Thursday, Feb. 23-25.

Wrestling

The wrestling team has worked hard and seen a lot of improvement since the start of their season. “We look forward to competing against more section opponents,” said coach John Delozier, “and positioning ourselves to get several of our wrestlers out to the State Tournament in March.” The Section 5AA Tournament will take place on   Saturday, Feb. 18.
