40 Red Knights Inducted into NHS

On Monday, November 25 the Benilde-St. Margaret’s community gathered to celebrate 40 Red Knights as they were inducted into BSM’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). This annual ceremony marks an important milestone in the academic lives of BSM students as well as their commitment to excellence in leadership, service, and character.

“Induction ceremonies are so important for groups like these because they commemorate and celebrate all the work that students did to be accepted into the society,” said Alena Paulson, advisor of BSM’s NHS chapter. “NHS is a difficult society and organization to be accepted into, and we take the best of the best. Therefore, they deserve to be recognized and celebrated and honored for that work.”

To be inducted into the BSM chapter of NHS, students must meet a rigorous set of criteria that emphasizes the high standards of NHS. Applicants must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher from their freshman to junior years, demonstrate at least 5 hours of documented leadership, and complete 10 hours of service. In addition, they must submit a character essay and receive positive feedback from teachers—a testament to their good standing in the BSM community.

For the new members, the induction marks not only an achievement but also a new chapter in their academic journeys. Once inducted, they take on new responsibilities, including 10 hours of tutoring per semester, 40 service hours each semester, and a commitment to maintaining a 3.6 GPA. Moreover, they must actively participate in NHS-sponsored events, continuing their engagement with the community and reinforcing the core values of leadership and service.

“We as teachers and as a program at BSM want to challenge our students to be better, do more, and serve their communities,” Paulson continued. “So offering and participating in our own BSM chapter of NHS is very important. It challenges them academically, and pushes them to support each other in academic pursuits and supports.”

The induction ceremony serves as a reminder of the profound impact that NHS has, not just on the students who participate but also on the broader BSM community. By adhering to NHS’s high standards of service and leadership, students contribute to the greater good, learning valuable skills along the way. Their work while being a part of the society—whether through tutoring, organizing community events, or engaging in service projects—helps shape them into well-rounded individuals ready to make a meaningful impact in the world.

For the new inductees, this recognition is just the beginning. New member, Mazlow Moquist (‘26), expresses her excitement for upcoming years by stating, “NHS has already helped me connect to my peers and strengthen my involvement in the BSM community. It also makes for a great tool for college applications.” As the new members fulfill their service requirements, participate in leadership opportunities, and support their peers, they will continue to exemplify the values that NHS and BSM stand for—values that will guide them in the years to come.

Congratulations to the new members of the National Honors Society!
