Benilde-St. Margaret's is pleased to announce the establishment of Minnesota's first Science National Honor Society (SNHS) chapter. The new organization marks a milestone for BSM's commitment to academic excellence.
"The work they have put into this point is an inspiration to future inductees and a shining example of the great things that are happening at Benilde-St. Margaret's," said high school principal, Matt Weingartz. "These students are on a great path ahead and I'm confident that with this same drive, curiosity, and determination that they will accomplish great things in the future!"
The BSM chapter, officially chartered at an induction ceremony in September, has 65 students who are enrolled in many of the four AP, two honors, and 10 other science courses offered at BSM. The Society was established in part by the leadership of department chair, Lisa Bargas, and two students, Isabella Golla '25 and Marina Vonhof '25. Together, they recognized a need to formalize and expand opportunities for Red Knights interested in the various fields of science.
"We are both part of several honor societies at BSM and last year we realized there was no honor society for science," co-founder Golla shared. While Golla and Vonhof have varied interests in fields of scientific interest, they have a shared commitment to knowledge and a dedication to shaping the future of scientific research.
The BSM Science National Honor Society Chapter is the latest addition to a vast network of 1,071 SNHS chapters nationwide. "Having the only SNHS chapter in the state makes BSM a leader in promoting scientific excellence, creating pathways for students who are passionate about science to explore, grow, and succeed in their academic and professional endeavors," Bargas said, who serves as advisor of BSM's SNHS chapter.
The SNHS is a nationwide organization that recognizes high-achieving science students and encourages them to engage in community service and leadership roles related to science. "Students will engage in science outreach projects and initiatives that not only strengthen their own understanding, but also improve scientific literacy in their broader community," Bargas added.
Students who are part of BSM's inaugural class of SNHS inductees are using their passion for science to offer tutoring sessions for other BSM students who may be needing help. They also plan to share their skills and knowledge with the Little Knights on campus, conducting science experiments and introducing them to the wonders of science at an early age.
