BSM Baseball Captures First State Championship Title

BSM baseball took home the Class AAA state championship title on Friday, June 17 after topping Mankato West 4-3 in extra innings. This is the Red Knights’ first state title in program history.

"We are so proud of the team and their hard work," said Andy Judkins, BSM baseball coach. "It was so fun to be part of the first baseball state championship for Benilde-St. Margaret's."

BSM got on the scoreboard first at Target Field after a 2-out RBI single by sophomore Connor Armand gave the Red Knights a 1-0 lead through two innings. The Red Knights extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning after senior Daniel Porisch hit a 2-strike, 2-out, 2 RBI single with the bases loaded. The Mankato West Scarlets got back into the game in the fifth inning, adding two runs of their own to bring the score to 3-2. The Scarlets then tied the game in the top of the sixth on a passed ball. BSM and Mankato West would stay knotted 3-3 through seven innings. In the extra eighth inning, senior Sam Monk hit a walk-off RBI double to drive in senior Tomas Lee for the 4-3 win.

Lee, Porisch, senior Owen Omdahl, and sophomore Caleb Koskie were named to the All-Tournament team.

BSM advanced to the state tournament after a 11-4 win over Hutchinson to capture the Section 6AAA championship title on Thursday, June 9.

Earning the No. 2 seed in the Class AAA tournament, the Red Knights met the Winona Winhawks in quarterfinal action. In the 4-1 win, BSM’s first two runs resulted from Winona errors in the second and third innings. In the fourth inning, the Red Knights scored their only earned run of the game after two singles drove in a run. The fifth inning found BSM scoring another run off a Winhawk error, giving them a 4-0 lead. Winona tallied their lone run of the game off a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

In semifinals, it was a back-and-forth battle with the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks. The Red Knights led the Thunderhawks 4-0 after the two innings, but Grand Rapids came back in the third inning with six runs to give them the 6-4 lead. The Red Knights were able to rally in the bottom of the fifth and take a 7-6 lead over Grand Rapids, but Grand Rapids would take an 8-7 lead right back in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, BSM added three runs to give them a 10-8 lead that would carry them to the win.

"These boys are a special group that came together to reach their ultimate goal and create a lifelong memory," added Judkins. "I'm very grateful to be their coach and so excited for the team."

Congratulations on your outstanding season and state title win, Red Knights!
