The 2024 Benilde-St. Margaret’s Christmas card was revealed today, featuring the creative talents of Maddy Wacek ’27. Her pen and ink drawing features the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child under a shining star. The piece is entitled, “Mother Mary and the Light of Life.”
“I have fond memories of when I was younger, and would see the beautiful stained glass windows in church,” Wacek said, “I wanted to recreate that look in this piece with a Christmas scene of Jesus's birth.”
Wacek has taken art classes at BSM, including drawing and painting which have helped her be more creative. Outside of school, she draws and sketches, creating original works that are meaningful to her and shares with family and friends. Wacek typically works with pen and ink and collages instead of paints. She is looking forward to taking more art courses during her junior year.
Wacek’s work was selected from among a variety of works submitted by BSM students in high school and junior high. “I am really excited that my piece was selected by Ms. Hermanny,” Wacek said, adding, “It feels like a big accomplishment that is meaningful for me.”
“Maddy's work is stunning, beautifully capturing the central image of the Virgin Mother’s love and joy at the birth of the Christ Child. We are thrilled to feature her talents on this year's Benilde-St. Margaret’s Christmas card,” said Danielle Hermanny ’03, BSM president.
The original art will be featured publicly at BSM during the Christmas season and will become part of the permanent collection of student art on display at BSM.
