Each year, BSM proudly celebrates the diverse cultures and importance of being multilingual within our community. World Language and Culture Week is filled with activities that help students learn about one another through languages while recognizing and honoring the different backgrounds of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and families.
As a Catholic school, this week helps Benilde-St. Margaret’s foster an environment in which students can embody Catholic values, especially the principle of human dignity. By emphasizing a curiosity to learn about others, students can further open their minds, leading to a stronger sense of community by being inclusive. BSM shapes a community where diversity is celebrated, and each individual is treated with respect and dignity for their uniqueness
“World Language Week reminds us about the diversity in languages and cultures at BSM and in our world,” said Amy Jo Hyde ‘89, French teacher. “This week provides a chance to reflect on our common humanity while at the same time appreciating how we come at things from different perspectives.”
The week-long celebration began on Monday, Feb. 26 and concludes Friday, Mar. 1. In addition to a fun Kahoot Trivia game on international foods, a special Taher menu all week with an international flair, the world language department decorated the windows of the CUBE with phrases in different languages.
BSM has students read prayers in different languages during announcements and messages on the digital screens throughout school highlighted the diversity of languages spoken at BSM. “I like reading the screens [with information on different cultures] because it exposes me to different cultures and perspectives. I feel closer to my spirituality and classmates from different backgrounds,” senior Veronica Phillips said.
Languages serve as a bridge between various cultures, making the world a closer community. As Red Knights prepare to navigate life outside of BSM, learning to celebrate these differences can prepare students for future journeys and help them to keep an open mind. Languages make it possible for us to have a greater understanding of our differences, and also helps us further understand ourselves and our similarities with one another.
