District Court Judge Offers Mock Trial Students Lessons in Law

On January 3, the Mock Trial JV team had the privilege of meeting with District Court Judge Luis Bartolomei of Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District. The team members, comprised of students in 7-11th grade, heard first-hand about the field of law and the inner workings of the court system. Justice Bartolomei also gave the Mock Trial students advice and encouragement for their upcoming competitions. BSM has two Mock Trial teams competing this year. Competitions begin this Thursday, January 10 which will be held at the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s has taught me to set, strive for and achieve every goal I create. From joining the Mock Trial team in eighth grade, to participating in Speech, BSM has also helped me evolve into being a better leader overall. My experience at BSM has helped to shape and prepare me for my new role as a Mock Trial junior captain and an extern in a Judge’s chambers.

World Language Teachers Create Immersion Experience for Students

For the last ten years, Amy Jo Hyde has taken BSM students to Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji to provide them with a unique immersion experience in an effort to create energy and enthusiasm for learning French. “She does this out of the goodness of her heart and is one of the most generous people I have ever met,” said Megan Hansen, BSM Spanish teacher. This year, Megan and a group of Spanish students joined forces with Amy Jo and BSM French students from November 30 - December 2. A total of 22 students attended thanks to the guidance of Amy Jo and Megan.

President's Edition: The Gift of a BSM Education

As I walked through the main hallway earlier today, on my left, I noticed our Chapel filled with students wrapped in prayer and to my right in the darkened Great Hall, a prayer labyrinth was illuminated by candlelight. There are particular times throughout the year when the gifts of our Benilde-St. Margaret’s community shine brightly, and today clearly marked one of those days. This is how some of our students describe the gift of their BSM education.
