As I sit here writing in one of UW-Madison’s quainter dining halls, I recall that at this very moment in time the lunchroom at BSM is abuzz with activity. It’s likely that my younger siblings are there, laughing and yelling, contributing to the cacophony of Red Knights perpetually present at lunchtime.
You have probably seen the hashtags and the social media posts, and it’s hard to miss the TV coverage related to the student initiated walkouts in support of better laws about guns and more help for students who are suffering. It is heartbreaking to know that the impetus behind these public, peaceful student-led walkouts are the senseless deaths of so many young people around the country. This keeps me up at night.

In loving memory of Ben Byers, BSM Class of ’78 Graduate (1959-2017)
"Warm greetings to all of you, my esteemed BSM classmates and cherished friends,
It is with immense regret that I am unable to be sitting there with and among you this fine evening. It is my hope that there is a rarified air that permeates this gathering, because there is a feeling of pride and a spirit of pioneering that makes our Class of 1978 an exclusive club -- not in an elitist way, but in the sense that we wear the mantle of originals and benefactors. I will explain.

Screenagers Documentary Viewing
Please join us Thursday, February 8, at 7 p.m. in BSM's Hamburge Theater, for a screening of the documentary Screenagers. This documentary highlights the effect of the digital age on children and provides ideas on how to help them minimize harmful effects and find balance. In Screenagers, physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction.
