Summer Camps

BSM Summer Camps for 2019

General Information and Directions:

  • Please arrive the first day of camp about 15 minutes early to check in. Our coaches will be at the camp location at least 10 minutes before the camp begins and will remain at the location for approximately 15 minutes after camp ends. Please be sure the camper is picked up right after camp each day.

  • We suggest each camper bring their own water bottle (clearly marked) and any necessary equipment to participate in the camp.

  • All camps will be held at Benilde-St. Margaret's School (2501 South Highway 100, St. Louis Park) EXCEPT for the following:

    • Boys' Hockey Camps which are held at St. Louis Park Rec Center (3700 Monterey Drive, St. Louis Park)

    • Girls' Hockey Camps which are held at St. Louis Park Rec Center (3700 Monterey Drive, St. Louis Park)

    • Sailing Camp which is at Lake Harriet (4135 West Lake Harriet Parkway, Minneapolis). Meet at boat launch at the Sailing School hut.

    • Tennis Camp which is held at Aquila Park Tennis Courts (3110 Xylon Avenue S, St. Louis Park)

    • Virtual Reality Camp which is held at REM5 (4950 West 35th Street, St. Louis Park)

Activities

Drama Camp

Ages: Students entering grades 3-7

Dates: June 17 - June 21  (Mon - Fri)

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Noon)

Cost: $110 early registration / $125 walk in

Description: 

Join us for a week full of Supercalifraglistic fun! Learn dances to the big hits from the show including a song from Mary Poppins Returns!  Students will explore character work and learn scenes and songs culminating in our mini-version of Mary Poppins.  

Megan Kelly Hubbell (Chanhassen Dinner Theaters, Children’s Theater Company), Nickie Kromminga Hill (Chanhassen Dinner Theaters, Anoka MS for the Arts), and Blake Brauer (Morris Park Players, St. Paul Conservatory for the Arts) will lead the camp for lots of high energy fun and learning.

Description: This camp serves as an introduction to French through conversation, culture, songs and games. No previous exposure to French is necessary. Topics include: greetings, numbers, colors, clothing, parts of the body, Café vocabulary, the French-speaking world, Paris Monuments and French trivia. We will sample les crêpes, la baguette et le fromage, les croissants, et les macarons! Bon Appétit et Bon Voyage!

Ages: Students entering grades 5-7

Dates: July 16 - July 19   (Mon - Thurs)

Description: BSM needs a crime scene investigator - become a forensic scientist!  Help BSM solve crimes daily. We will dust and lift fingerprints, analyze footprints, hair and glass at a crime scene. Each day we will learn different techniques to solve the "crime of the day."

Description: In this action-packed camp, Students channel their inner competitive spirit to complete 60 second challenges that reinforce specific STEM principles. From exploring energy conservation by rolling marbles over tape to understanding the power of air pressure by making cups fly, each day, learners utilize household items and micro-challenges to demonstrate the expansive world of STEM. As the challenges in 60 Seconds or Less Camp become progressively more difficult, students need to think fast, move quickly and apply the real-world principles they’ve learned in order to earn the honor of being called a true STEM champion!

Class: Coding Drones Camp (NEW!)

Description: Take to the skies with mini drones! Housing a thrilling, hands-on aerial robotics platform, this camp is the perfect introduction to the world of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In this indoor camp, safety is a priority as students learn to fly while exploring the real-world applications of drones. Campers go through Droneology, the online drone education platform, master basic piloting skills, construct an obstacle course to fly through and stage a final race to showcase their cumulative knowledge. Putting critical thinking to the test, the camp also has students brainstorm ways drones could be used for good, sketching out their ideas for new and innovative drones and drone uses.

Class: Computer Building with Minecraft & Raspberry Pi

Ages: Students entering grades 4-7

Description: Learn how to build a computer, and prepare your kids for a lifetime of building technology! Build. Program. Play. As kids build and progress through the games, they develop both technical skills and approaches that lead to inventive solutions. Engineering For Kids will coach you through this learning system which teaches kids hardware engineering and programming through a combination of an engaging storyline, physical building, and the Raspberry Pi Edition of Minecraft.

Class: Creative Game Design Camp (NEW!)

Description: Calling all future writers, artists, designers and game developers! Students in this collaborative class enjoy storyboarding their games with character, enemy and plot development.
Using Bloxels, they will turn their interactive stories and physical creations into a digital video game. They will use Bloxels game board and blocks to create the characters, levels, and other art for their games. They capture all of their creations using the Bloxels App, where they edit and customize everything - what it looks like and how elements interact and behave, which turns it all into a fun playable game on the tablet.

Description: Hurricanes, tornadoes, and other destructive weather events highlight the role of engineers in improving forecasts and reducing the toll from natural disasters. Join our Disaster Engineering camp to brainstorm ideas and then use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test and refine projects to avoid or minimize the impact of natural disasters like guiding search & rescue robots, measuring wind speeds and designing sturdier buildings.

Description: Which came first, the chicken or egg-citing physics challenges? In this fast moving camp, students turn the study of motion and mass into hands-on projects and team building challenges! They’ll spin, toss, race and design while studying the ideas of motion, such as velocity, speed and the major role gravity plays. These egg-cellent activities are not only engaging, but they provide valuable reinforcement of the physics concepts students often struggle with. Each day, learners meet the challenges of Eggs-traordinary Physics Camp head-on with teamwork, application-based learning, active demonstrations and a whole lot of egg-streme fun!

Description: Enter the world of famous structures and design in Famous Architecture Around the World! Travel the globe learning how ancient architectural breakthroughs led to the fundamental design elements we know today. From walls and arches to post-and-lintel building techniques, use bricks each day to construct and learn how similar design elements evolved at the same time in different societies around the world. After the foundation’s been poured, discover and replicate some of the most famous structures in history while learning how different societies tackled the stylistic, artful and structural considerations of construction and architecture. Class: Ocean Exploration Camp (NEW!)

Description: In this incredible camp, students journey from the tropics to the poles, inspect arctic food webs, simulate coral reef adaptations and survey everything from the great river deltas to the Mariana Trench. They collaborate to bring the California sea otter back from the brink of extinction and track great white sharks across the open ocean, learning and answering important sea-dwelling questions about the variety of the oceans and the differences in ecosystems. Through action-packed activities, learners discover the physical and geological sciences that underpin all ocean life like density, buoyancy, heat transfer, plate tectonics and the water cycle. In Ocean Exploration Camp, STEM education is your oyster!

Class: Traveling Artists Camp (NEW!)

Description: Survey the world of art by carving totem poles in the Pacific Northwest, crafting Aztec masks in the heart of Mexico and experimenting with the artistic traditions of history. In this thrilling camp, students get creative examining the STEM processes that make art possible, like the delicate balance of water tension involved in Japanese Suminagashi paper or the cultural traditions and paleontology of Chinese “dragons”. This camp was developed by an artist and art educator in order to embody the true insight of a creative mind. In Traveling Artist Camp, explore the different cultures of the world through the depth of their history, legacy and incredible works of art!

Description: Jump on board and join the crew to work together to explore everyday engineering challenges to find buried treasure. During this week we focus on mechanical and marine engineering. Campers will explore the ideas of buoyancy and surface area as they design their pirate ships, the sails for their ships, and a system to retrieve sunken treasures! So what do you say; Are you ready to sail the seas? Being a Treasure Hunter involves more than just searching for buried treasure. Our Engineering For Kids campers have to engineer ways to build their ship, load it up and sail around the world. Sometimes, buried treasure isn’t found on an island but in a dark cavern far below the ocean’s surface. Campers take home the projects they build.

Description: Explore the emerging world of virtual reality at REM5 Virtual Reality Laboratory. Start with an intro to VR technology and learn the difference between different headsets and operating systems before diving into VR content with both feet. Each day we’ll explore a new piece of content and discuss the decisions designers made that we loved or with they would have changed. We’ll have challenges that will improve your VR skills and understanding and even have some time to have fun along the way. No VR experience is necessary, just have an open mind about what’s possible in a virtual world.

Football Camp COMPLETED

Description: The BSM football camp will provide a non-contact learning environment focusing on skills, techniques and teamwork. The emphasis will be on fundamentals. All campers will receive a T-shirt, and awards are given daily.

Description: BSM high school students who plan on participating in the football program will learn the fundamentals of the game while learning the basic concepts of the Red Knights offense and defense.  Equipment will be given out and there will be limited contact at this camp. We will be following the Minnesota State High School League rules for camp regarding contact -  two days of camp with helmets and mouth guards followed by two days of camp with shoulder pads, helmets and mouth guards, followed by one day of camp in full gear.

*NOTE:  Players planning to attend the University of Minnesota Duluth Football Camp -- MUST attend this camp in order to be in compliance with MSHSL summer football practice guidelines.*

Description: Football Agility Strength and Speed Training (FAST) is a comprehensive regimen specifically designed to develop football players. Our program is based on the University of Wisconsin’s strength and agility program and our results have proven that it works. It is highly physically demanding and is recommended for sophomores, juniors and seniors. Freshmen are welcome to participate.

FAST incorporates speed work, agility drills to improve foot speed, and rigorous weight lifting to develop strength, power, and explosiveness. Since we started using this program in 2008, those players who have committed themselves to the program have had tremendous success. They have become stronger, faster and more complete football players who are prepared to start the season. We meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7-9 am on the football field and in the weight room throughout the summer.

Tues/Thurs are scrimmage days with two groups (10:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. for grades 9-10 and 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. for grades 11 - 12).

Description: Hey Red Knights (Current and New) and Girls Lax players who want to improve their game -- join us for ten sessions of intensive lacrosse training this summer with BSM varsity coaches. We will have conditioning, individual skill training and team concepts. Players will have fun and work hard, helping the girls to grow individually and as teammates.

Samples of activities include: Attacking - dodges and fakes, 1v1s to goal, eluding a double team. Midfield - taking the draw, attacking ground balls and midfield defense. Defense - 1v1s, slides and clears. Extensive stick work drills necessary for the game! Work on small-sided games and larger 7v7 scrimmages.

Description: Have fun learning the basics of sailing including tacking, gybing, wind, knots, docking and boat rigging. Everyone gets to skipper the boat and trim the sails of a Lido 14 foot sailboat equipped with both a main and headsail on Lake Harriet. Each sailboat will have one coach and up to three students. Description: This mini-camp is conducted by Varsity Head Coach Scott Helling-Christy and assistant coaches. This camp is open to ALL high school students and is structured like the training sessions players will experience during tryouts and the season. This is a great opportunity to meet other players and work with the BSM coaching staff.

Softball Camp

Ages: Students entering grades 5-9

Dates:  June 10 - June 13  (Mon-Thurs)

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 12:00  p.m. (Noon)

Cost:  $110 early registration / $125 walk in

Description: The BSM coaching staff and current and former varsity players will instruct campers on the finer points of fast-pitch softball, including catching, throwing, bunting, hitting, base running, pitching, positioning, fielding responsibilities and the overall sport dynamics. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt.

Tennis Camp - Boys & Girls

Ages: Students entering grades 7-12

Sessions: (Mon-Thurs) 
Session 1 -  June 17 - June 20  (Mon-Thurs)
Session 2 -  June 24 - June 27  (Mon-Thurs)
Session 3 -  July 8 - July 11 (Mon-Thurs)
Session 4 -  July 15 - July 18  (Mon-Thurs)

Time: Beginners - 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. OR Advanced - 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 pm

Location: Aquila Park Tennis Courts  (3110 Xylon Avenue S, St. Louis Park)

Cost: $100 per session / $375 for all sessions

Description: Learn to play tennis or work on specific areas. BSM Varsity coaching staff will share their expertise on all areas of the game including hitting, footwork, serving, etc. Beginners is for students in grade 7-11 with NO Varsity/JV match experience. Advanced is for students in grades 7-12 with previous Varsity/JV match experience. Questions, please contact BSM Athletic Director Jerry Pettinger

Junior Red Knights Volleyball Camp

Ages: Students entering Grades 3-6

Dates: July 8 - July 11   (Mon-Thurs)

Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Cost: $110 early registration / $125 walk in

Description: This introductory camp is designed for the young aspiring spikers between 3rd through 6th grade. Emphasis will be placed on the FUNdamentals of the game in a fast-moving paces with a focus on getting many reps for every camper. Participants will learn the basic skills necessary for passing, setting, serving and attacking the ball. Campers will also be taught some of the basic rules of the game and rotation. This is a great first camp or a good recap for those athletes wanting to advance their skills to the next level. BSM Varsity coaches and athletes will lead a fun-filled week of games, instructions and contests. T-shirts will be awarded to all participants.

Description: Do you want to get ready for the upcoming volleyball season? Join your teammates at these drop-in sessions where we will work on your passing, setting and hitting skills,  Volleyball experience is not required. We will run a variety of drills and scrimmages so that you can get plenty of touches on the ball. Take advantage of this great opportunity to get into "volleyball shape", work on your skills and showcase your talents to the BSM coaches who will run each session. Come ready to work hard and have fun. See you on the court!

Is there a specific area of your game that you want to work on or would like more individualized development? BSM varsity coaches Ashley Wittman Bushman, Molly Hurrle, Mackenzie Piechowski and Michael Becker can help with this. You pick the skills you want to work on, and they’ll help you take your game to a higher level! The one-hour lesson at BSM can be one-on-one or with another player and arranged at the mutually available time.

Freestyle/Greco Spring Session

Ages: Students entering Grades K - 8

Location: BSM Wrestling Room (in Haben Center)

Cost: $100 (covers all sessions)

Description: It is our intention to build, nurture and enhance wrestling skills in current an future wrestlers. Our program is open to all youth wrestlers Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Practices are held in the wrestling room at BSM. Costs for participation do not include USA Membership or tournament participation fees. Costs for tournaments vary per event and are usually held on Saturdays and Sundays.   Uniforms are available for purchase.
