National World Language Honor Society
In the spring of 1997, the World Language Department started local chapters of national language honor societies at Benilde-St. Margaret's for French, Latin and Spanish. In 2018, the National Chinese Honor Society was added. A separate national organization exists for each of these languages.
The World Language Department’s goal in creating these honor societies is to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievement, and to create enthusiasm for different cultures and language learning.
The requirements for acceptance are to be a sophomore, junior, or senior in the 2nd semester of their second year of language learning at BSM, have a 3.7 grade point average in the language, and a 3.5 cumulative average. Students will stay on the society's national registrar even if they are no longer enrolled in a language class. However, only those who continue their BSM language classes through their senior year will be honored with a purple cord at commencement.
Look for an application from your language teacher in early February, which will note the current year’s application deadline. Applicants who miss the deadline will not be considered, but may apply the following year. We must meet the deadline set forth by the bylaws of the national organizations.
