National Mathematics Honor Society
The Mu Alpha Theta National High School and Junior College Mathematics Club was founded in 1957 by Dr. and Mrs. Richard V. Andree at the University of Oklahoma.
In his words, Mu Alpha Theta is "an organization dedicated to promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school and junior college education." The name Mu Alpha Theta was constructed from the Greek lettering for the phonemes m, a, and th.
To qualify for membership in the Mu Alpha Theta Honors Society, a student must meet the following criteria:
- Successfully completed a full year of Honors Algebra II, Honors Precalculus, or an AP Mathematics course.
- Maintain a minimum 3.7 GPA in mathematics courses.
- Maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
Membership Requirements:
Once admitted, students must continue their study of Honors or AP-level mathematics through their senior year to remain in the society.
