In the spring of 1997, the World Language Department started local chapters of national language honor societies at Benilde-St. Margaret's for French, Latin and Spanish. In 2018, the National Chinese Honor Society was added. A separate national organization exists for each of these languages.
The World Language Department’s goal in creating these honor societies is to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievement, and to create enthusiasm for different cultures and language learning.
The requirements for acceptance are to be a sophomore, junior, or senior in the 2nd semester of Level II of language study, have a 3.7 grade point average in the language, and a 3.5 cumulative average. Students are members as long as they are enrolled in a language class. Graduating seniors who stay in their BSM language classes through senior year, are honored at commencement with a purple honor cord.
Look for an application from your language teacher in early February, which will note the current year’s application deadline. Applicants who miss the deadline will not be considered, but may apply the following year. We must meet the deadline set forth by the bylaws of the national organizations.
