A Mathlete's Perspective
BSM prides itself on being a community where everybody can feel welcome. Whether you are eating lunch with friends or simply walking through the hallways, something about BSM always makes you feel at home. I think BSM’s strongest sense of community comes through in their vast array of clubs and activities. There are dozens of clubs offered at BSM with new ones starting each year so that each student is sure to find at least a couple that they enjoy.
For me, one of the clubs I joined this year was the Math League. I decided to join it with a couple of friends, and it has definitely been a great experience. I have enjoyed the club because it is a fun way to wake my brain up in the morning, and there is really no pressure involved. The club practices Tuesdays before school, and each practice consists of completing a math worksheet. There are four different levels of competition in math league which range from algebra to calculus. That way, everyone can participate, regardless of what level math class they’re in.
Math League also has competitions once a month where you go to different schools and compete. One of the best parts of this club is that it is completely stress free and is something anyone can try whether you’re great at math or not. This club also works incredibly well for people with busy schedules. Each practice only takes around 20 minutes, and all the meets are completely optional. It makes it quite easy to join and participate in. Overall, I really liked Math League, and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys math and has a little bit of free time on their hands.
I think my experience with Math League reflects the experiences many students have with the clubs BSM offers. Most clubs are easy to join and allow you to meet new people in a fun and welcoming environment. With the sheer number of clubs at BSM, each person is bound to find at least a few that interest them. For anyone on the fence about joining a club at BSM, go for it! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it just as much as I have.
