BSM Blog: My Journey in the BSM Junior High, A Foundation for Success
I’ll never forget my first steps in the halls of Benilde-St. Margaret’s Junior High. I was an awkward twelve-year-old, self-conscious and walking into unknown territory. I was flooded with emotions, most of all fear. Ready to turn right around and tell my parents I couldn’t do it, I quietly pushed my fears aside and continued to walk forward. Little did I know that those steps would mark the beginning of a great educational journey and some of the best experiences of my life.
If you are a student considering coming to BSM, I would highly recommend beginning your experience in the junior high. The teachers are welcoming, available and do everything in their power to prepare you for your transition into high school. The junior high also offers many unique educational trips and opportunities for the students. For example, my eighth-grade year, I travelled to Washington, D.C. with some of my classmates and teachers. Not only did I get to see and learn about American history, but also my relationship with my classmates and teachers grew tremendously. And of course, there is Wolf Ridge. No one in my grade will ever forget about that trip. There were frigid temperatures, but so much fun! It is trips like these that make learning more enjoyable and interesting for students.
Another benefit of starting as a seventh grader at BSM is the opportunity to make new friendships and get involved. I recall going to an open house and seeing all of the amazing clubs and activities students could participate in. I immediately got involved with dance team and met my first BSM friend, Lauren, who remains one of my closest friends to date. In fact, this June, we will be celebrating our friendship with a graduation open house together. The confidence I gained from dance team helped encourage me to explore other areas of interest, like choir. I am now a proud member of BSM’s a cappella group the Red Knotes. The ability to sing and perform with a group of kids united in song is indescribable and an opportunity I will be forever grateful for. At BSM they make it almost impossible not to get involved. There is truly something for everyone!
If you are like I was and are unsure whether you should take that first step into the halls of the BSM Junior High, I strongly recommend you do so. Remember, you are not alone! Every other student walking in is just like you – nervous and scared. With the help of the teachers, counselors and students, I guarantee you will have a wonderful experience. The junior high taught me many life skills and study habits that I carried into high school. Furthermore, it laid the foundation that led me to discover my passions, have confidence and achieve academic success.
