An Activity for Anyone
Some of you may not be aware, but there is this up and coming sport spreading like wildfire across the state of Minnesota. What is it you ask? Well, it has the word ‘ultimate’ in it. Does that grab your attention?
Ultimate Frisbee! The sport brings a unique twist to the high school scene and combines different skills from various sports. For those of you who do not know, Benilde-St. Margaret’s currently has three teams. Cool right? U Betcha! We have a boys’ team, a girls’ team and a junior high team. Each team competes within their own division through Minnesota Ultimate (the governing body).
Now, you’re probably wondering who I am, right? My name is Kelsey Mueller. I’m currently one of the coaches for the girls and junior high teams. I also play competitively during the summer with an elite women’s team called “Pop,” and I started my career at the University of Minnesota Duluth. That’s right, you can keep playing Ultimate Frisbee after high school, competing at the college and club levels!
I’ve been coaching at BSM for two seasons now, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. In just two years, I’ve been able to see the girls’ team double in size and help BSM form their first junior high team. And, this year BSM faculty & staff competed against the students in a pick-up game. That was awesome to see, and I hope it is a tradition that will continue!
The girls on the team make the experiences a positive one, and it is great to see the passion they have developed for a sport they’ve never played before. The unique thing about Ultimate Frisbee is that all players come from different backgrounds. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been playing sports your whole life or you’ve never even played a sport before – anyone can pick up a disc and learn how to throw and catch.
If you would like a better idea of what Ultimate Frisbee is all about, come check us out. I'd be happy to share more information with you, or you can find a fellow Red Knight that loves the game as much as I do. It’s never too late to give Ultimate Frisbee a try, especially since you’d be part of this growing movement here in Minnesota (which has the most youth teams in the nation). So, while you are out there enjoying these summer days, pick up a frisbee. Hopefully, I'll see you next year!
