It’s no Debate, Red Knights Head to State!

Benilde-St. Margaret’s debate team enjoyed a successful season culminating in two Red Knight teams heading to this weekend’s MSHSL State Debate Tournament.

“This year, I've had the opportunity to debate with (and against) a bunch of extremely talented individuals,” said Aidan Marks ‘23 who will be competing at State with Megan Cornell ‘23. “Our team has grown throughout the year, and the regular reason ended with me feeling confident in my abilities as a debater.”

Both BSM teams will be competing in the Public Forum Debate category where each member presents a series of speeches on a given topic, writing cases for and against the resolution. They then respond to the competing team’s arguments and are judged and scored on their ability to provide a persuasive argument.

Aidan and Megan will be competing as the 6th seed team, while Luke Evans ‘22 and Aidan Traverse ‘22 will be the 5th seed team. Miguel Nunez-Mudoy ‘23 and Michael McDonald ‘24 are team alternates.

“I'm super proud of how our team continues to persevere and thrive in a continually changing environment through covid,” said BSM Debate Coach Alex Smith. “”With all of the hard work and passion the students have brought this year, the debate team is possibly the best it's ever been. We're all excited to cap off a great season by competing at state.”

The first round of the tournament begins at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14 and concludes on Saturday, Jan. 15. The MSHSL program and tournament schedule can be found here.

“To me, qualifying for State validates the progress I've made not only this year, but also throughout my entire time on the debate team,” Marks said, adding, “It shows I have what it takes to compete at a high level. I'm excited to see how I stack up against the best debaters in the state and view this as an amazing learning opportunity to build on next year.”

The State Tournament for Debate, in its 121st year, is the MSHSL’s longest-running event. Because of COVID-19, the event will be held virtually for all participants.

We are #BSMproud of our Debate Team’s accomplishments this season, and are cheering them on at State!
