BSM Sports Teams Enjoy Winter Season

Red Knight athletes are showing their competitive side on the ice, in the pool, and on the court this winter! The pause on practices leading up to Christmas break resulted in a unique, shortened season, but that has served to only deepen the drive for Red Knights to succeed.

Alpine Ski

This year’s alpine ski team is young and full of talent. The girls’ team wrapped up their conference meets strong with a first place finish Feb. 19, 2021 and the boys’ team took second. The streak of cold-temp days posed a challenge for Red Knights, but they found ways to stay warm and put in the work at practice. The team is highly anticipating the section meet which takes place Monday, March 8.

Boys’ Basketball

The boys' basketball team has been doing well this year with a strong group of upperclassmen and new head coach, Damian Johnson. The Red Knights have multiple players averaging more than 10 points per game, and they are all working together to adjust to the circumstances of the season. They have enjoyed being able to play together and simply get back on the court. Their first section game will be held Wednesday, March 17.

Girls’ Basketball
The girls' basketball team is young this year, with the majority of players being underclassmen. They’ve had a good season so far, and are continuing to grow as a team as they anticipate a strong and successful future. Section play will begin Wednesday, March 17.

The Knightettes are also having an outstanding season! With quite a few new members, the team has grown stronger and closer as teammates. They have competed in four competitions and defeated their rival, Totino Grace, for the first time in two years. Senior captain Myka Field says, “We are so grateful to be in person rather than on Zoom, which we did for a month or so of practice, and we take in every moment together!” The Knightettes will compete at sections Saturday, Feb. 17 with the hopes to proceed to State.

Boys’ Hockey
The boys’ hockey team has been doing extremely well this year, currently standing 4th in the state. The Red Knights started their season with a 10-win streak! The senior players have been great leaders on and off the ice, helping teammates hone their skills. Some of the team’s more difficult rivals are coming up in the schedule, but the players are looking forward to the challenge. The Section 6AA tournament begins Thursday, March 18.
Girls’ Hockey

The girls’ hockey team is having one of their strongest seasons yet with a large showing of upperclassmen contributing to their success, including six seniors. Senior Captain Abigail Hancock says, “Everyone plays their role and that is what makes us successful. From the forward side all the way to goaltending, we have one of the deepest teams in the state.” The team has valued their time together on and off the ice, and they are looking forward to section play beginning Tuesday, March 16.
Nordic Ski
Because of the cold streak this winter, there has been inconsistency in nordic ski team practices and races. However, Red Knights have still found warmth, joy, and success this season. Many individuals have had impressive races, and younger team members are showing a lot of promise. The Section 6 meet will be held Monday, March 1.
Boys' Swim

The delayed start to the boys’ swim season posed a challenge for Red Knights, but with some hard work, the team was able to do well this season. Senior Casey Prindiville says “We ended up only losing one meet in conference play. Some swimmers have really done exceptionally well this year, and the team is continuing to make the best of the rest of our season.” The Section 2A swim meet will take place Saturday, March 13.

BSM wrestlers are working just as hard as they would in a normal season, and they're making strides toward becoming an even stronger team. Senior Captain Danny McCoy says, “Overall, the team is really improving, and I am excited to see where we end up at the end of the season.” The Section 5AA tournament will take place Monday, March 8.
Benilde-St Margaret’s is proud to have a robust athletics program with student-athletes who are driven to work hard and support their teams throughout this distinctive season.
