BSM Speech Team Sends Five Red Knights to State Tournament

The season may have looked a little different for the BSM Speech Team this year, but it was definitely successful! The team finished as Conference Champions and is sending five Red Knights to compete at the MSHSL State Tournament April 23, 2021 in their respective categories.

Jackie Bucaro ‘21 - Extemporaneous Speaking
Maliah Jaiteh ‘21 - Poetry
Suzy Haakonson ‘22 - Discussion
Grace Ehrmantraut ‘23 and Bianca Mojica ‘23 - Duo

To allow for a safe, yet competitive season during the pandemic, meets were held virtually throughout the year. Despite having less face-to-face interaction, team spirit was still alive and well.

“Coming into this year, I didn’t really expect to be able to have a supportive environment since we were online, but our team was honestly closer than ever,” said long-time speech member Maliah Jaiteh ‘21. “Our team was largely made up of first-time speech members, and so many of them broke into finals [at meets] multiple times this season... our energy is what I enjoy most about the team: it’s so extremely motivating.”

“Personally, my favorite part about speech is the people. Students on the BSM team all come together to support one another,” Red Knight Suzy Haakonson ‘22 said. “While each one of us is competing individually, we know collectively that a win for one of us is a win for all of us.”

There are multiple categories in which Red Knights may decide to compete. Bianca Mojica ‘23 explained, “With Duo and Poetry, a selection is prepared beforehand from a piece of literature or a script, and that piece is memorized, cut down to ten minutes, and performed. Duo, which is the category I'm in, is super fun because you have a partner to work with and play off of.” Suzy Haakonson added, “My favorite speech highlight from this year is getting to experience a new category. I had always done interpretation categories before, like poetry, humor, storytelling, etc., but I found a love for discussion this year as it allows me to interact more often with speechers from other schools.”

Head coaches Alex Smith and Jake Mahler, along with personal coaches and supportive teammates, have led the team to many memorable achievements this year that will conclude with State.

Red Knights will log in to the State tournament beginning at 3:30 p.m., Friday, April 23, 2021. The Class AA Awards Ceremony will be live streamed at 10:45 p.m. For more information about the tournament, visit the MSHSL webpage

Congratulations on an impressive season, and good luck at State, Red Knights!
