BSM Bowlers Round Out Successful Season with Help from Benilde Alum Doug Burnikel ‘65

The Benilde-St. Margaret’s Bowling Team’s season came to a close at their final conference meet on Friday, November 15. Many people contributed to the team’s success including Assistant Coach Doug Burnikel, who is a ‘65 graduate of Benilde High School. Burnikel, who has been coaching for six years, was ecstatic to have been given the opportunity to serve as one of the coaches. Burnikel shared that he loves working with the kids and helping them become better bowlers.

“By mid-November every year, my goal is for every bowler to be better than they were on Labor Day!” Burnikel said. He added that he believes this has been the case with every bowler so far.

Burnikel has been passionate about bowling his entire life and has been able to bowl with Red Knights as an assistant coach since he began his coaching tenure six years ago. However, a devastating diagnosis of prostate cancer in September of 2018 hindered his ability to help out and pursue that passion.

During that time, Burnikel reconnected with the church and the community of Benilde-St. Margaret’s. He attended All Saints Mass last year and regularly meets with Father Tim Wozniak, BSM’s chaplain. He shared that this experience has had a profound impact on his faith and relationship with God.

A few months after the diagnosis, Burnikel was once again able to hit the lanes, despite ongoing treatments he receives and continues to receive. He is driven by his love for helping students succeed and the wonderful BSM community.

Burkinel’s story and passion for bowling is an inspiration to everyone at BSM, especially the bowling team. No matter a person’s own circumstances, they can always make a positive impact on those around them.

At the Bowling Team’s final conference meet, students experienced much success! Junior Sean Hilson was named first team all-conference for the season and sophomore Daniel Porisch received the All Honors award. To top it off, the BSM JV team finished second in the JV Conference Tournament.

We’d like to thank Doug Burkinel for his service, passion, and dedication to helping our student athletes succeed and for serving as an inspiration to us all!
