Ms. Hoogenakker's Experience

Ms. Kirsten Hoogenakker

When asked why BSM matters to her, Kirsten Hoogenakker had a quick response. “This community is loving and open enough to foster collaboration and inclusivity. The result is that our students are incredibly hardworking, have some amazing goals and are willing to take a stand on important issues.” She personally feels the support when she has a new exhilarating curriculum idea to explore.

Aside from heading up the Engineering and BioMed curricula, Ms. Hoogenakker works with Destination Imagination (DI) and the International RoboCup Rescue competition. Last spring she traveled with students to Doha, Qatar for an international DI competition, and she’ll be off to Japan this summer with RoboCup. Ms. Hoogenakker is constantly amazed at how “students have an insane amount of academic electives and extracurricular programs available to them!”

Of special note to Ms. Hoogenakker is the overall respect displayed throughout the school community. “I love how students say ‘thank you’ when they exit the classroom. My first day at BSM, I was so surprised I almost couldn't respond. The students are so polite, and even if it is a habit, it means a lot to the teachers.”

It might surprise people to know that Ms. Hoogenakker is the 2016 MN State Road Endurance Race Champion (cycling). The race covers 66 miles, at an average speed of over 20 mph, while climbing 3000 feet. Go Ms. Hoogenakker, and go Red Knights!
