Teacher Appreciation Week

May 15, 2017

At BSM, we pride ourselves on having the highest quality faculty and staff for our students. Thank you to all our wonderful faculty and staff for all that you do each day for the Red Knight community! Last week we highlighted a few of these amazing individuals for National Teacher Appreciation. See below. #BSMProud #NationalTeacherAppreciation #ThankATeacher

As a BSM class of ’89 graduate and a current parent of a student at BSM, Amy Jo Hyde is thrilled to be part of the BSM teaching staff. Ms. Hyde has been working at BSM for 10 years now and continues to be impressed with the “energy and enthusiasm of the BSM students!” As a French teacher, student council and yearbook adviser for the junior high, Ms. Hyde wears many hats in this community and we can’t thank her enough. Thank you Ms. Hyde for all that you do for BSM, "Once a Red Knight. Always a Red Knight!"

IMG_0502.JPG“Cheney may be an expert when it comes to technical difficulties at BSM, but he’s also one of the most beloved and friendly faces at BSM; students constantly flow in and out of the help desk with the intention of simply talking sports or catching up with Cheney.” The
bsmknighterrant.org captured Bill Cheney’s role here at BSM perfectly. In his 7th year getting to know these students at the help desk, he now has the opportunity to teach the newly adopted class Introduction to Coding, created by Mr. Cheney himself! He doesn’t just TALK sports with the students he also coaches the 9th grade basketball team, does stats for baseball and football, and is the E-Sports adviser. “I love The ENTHUSIASM and CONFIDENCE that everyone brings to the building, whether it's in the classroom or in their extracurricular activities.” Thank you Mr. Cheney!

The strong sense of community is what drew senior high math teacher Ms. Mary Glover to BSM. Since 2000, Ms. Glover has watched many of her students struggle and then succeed in math, and one of her favorite memories is watching them graduate. “It’s kind of emotional because you know you’ll miss them, and you’re also excited for them to go forward and do the things they do.” It is now sadly the time that we say goodbye to Ms. Glover as she will be retiring at the end of this school year. However, it is not goodbye, it is see you later as she plans to come back for Masses and remain involved with the BSM community. Thank you Ms. Glover, and remember, “Once a Red Knight, always a Red Knight!”

We cannot forget to thank some of our amazing staff members. He is the one behind the scenes ensuring BSM is in tip-top condition on a daily basis and Mr. Al Liekhus has been doing so for the past 24 years. After spending 20+ years with us and sending his four kids to BSM, Al will sadly be retiring at the end of the school year. - “I like working with all the people in our department, we have fun supporting the rest of the school. I also love how the community comes together to celebrate one another's accomplishments and gathers to support each other during times of sorrow.” Thank you Al, you will be missed!

After 33 years here at BSM, Tom Backen will unfortunately be leaving us this year to enjoy his retirement. Mr. Backen has never shied away from getting involved here at school. On top of his teaching career, he is currently an assistant speech coach and an adviser for the Knight Errant. He has also coached Knowledge Bowl, been a sophomore class adviser, NHS adviser, yearbook adviser and head speech coach. Backen even started the debate team, coached for nearly 20 years and ended up leading the team to both a state and national championship title. “BSM has such a healthy, rigorous learning environment, and I love the fact that we're constantly evolving and improving…I love the positive energy of the students and the strong, palpable feeling of community that we share here. BSM will always be in my heart.” Thank you Mr. Backen, you will be missed!

IMG_0550.JPGMs. Calli Olson has been teaching English at BSM for the past six years. She not only has caught the attention of her students but also the entire Red Knight community. Last year, Calli was awarded the Parents’ Choice Award, an award given to a teacher they believe brings out the best in their student, puts the Red Knight community first and is a mentor to their children. Ms. Olson mentors Red Knights both in the classroom as well as on the field as the JV girls’ soccer coach and varsity assistant coach here at BSM. Calli is an exemplary teacher who has great Red Knight energy and love for the community and students, “The best thing about BSM are the students I get to teach and interact with every day. They are so open and willing to learn and be challenged. I also love BSM's belief in creating well-rounded, globally aware citizens, and not just good students with high grades.” Thank you Ms. Olson for all that you do for the Red Knight community!

Mr. Charlie Keyes quickly found his home here at BSM as a beloved Theology teacher and Campus Minister. Mr. Keyes has shared his time, talent and knowledge with BSM for the past two years inside the classroom, in the Campus Ministry office and as the coach for the 7th grade baseball team. Thank you to Mr. Keyes and every theology teacher here at BSM for continuing to share the word of God: "I love how welcoming this community is, both in faculty/staff and students."

For 34 years, Mr. Scott Effertz has not only been teaching English to students in the classroom but also mentoring them in the theater as the artistic, technical and managing director of the drama department. Although he is transitioning from the English teaching role, Mr. Effertz is not saying goodbye to BSM quite yet. Effertz will still be running the drama department and all audio visual events along with the hopes to also substitute teach. After sending his three girls to BSM, he says that he loves BSM because, “of what it’s done for my family!” Thank you Mr. Effertz for all that YOU have done for BSM!
