KE Staff Win National Award

KE Staff Win National Award

April 12, 2017

Congratulations to the 2016-2017 Knight Errant (KE) staff on winning one of the highest honors in scholastic journalism: Online Pacemaker award! The Knight Errant was one of 9 online publications across the entire nation to receive this award in the small school (under 1,500 students) division.

Every year the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) presents students with awards for their exceptional work in journalism. The Pacemaker is a categorical award based on the type of publication. The BSM Knight Errant was awarded the Pacemaker for the online category.

“Entries are judged by teams of professionals based on the following criteria: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography and graphics.”

Since 2009, BSM's Knight Errant has been recognized by NSPA for their exemplary work in journalism.

The driving force behind the KE website is Online Editor-in-Chief Leo Driessen (‘17). On winning the award, he had this to share: “It was such a good feeling to win this award because I had put in a lot of work on the site. However, it is the work of each individual staff member on the Knight Errant that made the difference. It feels really good knowing the entire team contributed to make this happen.”

The Knight Errant staff knew they were a finalist for the award about a month ago, and earlier this week they were informed of the national award win. “It was really cool to have some recognition at the state level this past fall, but to be awarded at the national level is really an honor,” Leo said.

Leo credits the Knight Errant for sparking his love for journalism. He also is grateful the KE has offered him the opportunity to develop his critical thinking and writing skills and for helping him become a leader. He is most grateful for the friends he has made, "it has been really awesome forming relationships with advisers and the KE staff. The program has been such a rewarding experience.”

Leo plans to attend a journalism-focused school in the fall of 2018 but is still undecided as of now. He would like to continue his career in communications to keep spreading the news among any community he may be a part of next fall. “I want to continue writing for the school newspaper no matter what college I attend because KE has been so important to me in my high school experience at BSM.”

Thank you to the BSM community for all your support of the Knight Errant staff and thank you to the Knight Errant for continuing to share your talents with the greater BSM community.

“I am so proud of all the work the students have put in to make this happen. The Knight Errant prides itself on being a student-run newspaper, so special credit also goes to the online editor-in-chief, Leo Driessen, for setting the Pacemaker as a goal and then striving to have every aspect of the site--from content, to navigation menus, to fonts--be the best it could be," said Knight Errant Adviser, Ms. Kari Koshiol.

This is the Knight Errant's seventh time winning the Online Pacemaker since 2009. Congratulations to the Knight Errant on this well-deserved award and recognition, we are #BSMProud!
