Jr. High Girls' Mission Trip

Jr. High Girls' Mission Trip

June 18, 2017

New to the Benilde-St. Margaret's Junior High this year, Principal Claire Shea and Campus Minister Becca Meagher will lead 12 young ladies on a week long mission trip to Sisseton, South Dakota. They will be partnering with YouthWorks, a Christian organization dedicated to serving communities in crisis while delivering Christ-centered mission trips to teenagers. Students will serve by working on homes, partnering with local assisted living communities, and leading kids programming for children in the church.

Now, more than ever, our girls are in need of strong role models and leadership formation that promotes healthy body image, strong moral character, and inner confidence. The junior high years are such an important time in the social, emotional, and character development of young women. We believe that a mission trip with a focus on service, faith, and leadership is an important opportunity to bring to the BSMJH.

As the trip progresses, we will share some updates and photos of our experiences. Please check back to see how our week is going! (You can also follow Principal Shea on Twitter: @PrinShea_BSM.)

Day 1: Departing from BSM

With a blessing from Mr. J, we started our journey to South Dakota. With only a few bumps along the way, we arrived at our home for the next week. Relating to our trip's theme of friendship, we have started to get to know each other a little more. #WeHaveWhatItTakes

By the way, Happy Fathers' Day!

Day 2: Our First Day in Sisseton

Today, we got an early start and began our day by learning about Native American history. After this, we split off into our work crews. One group helped paint a house while the rest helped out in the Kids' Club. We were all able to learn more about the community we are serving through a local teacher named Darryl. We're excited to get out and continue our service tomorrow!

Day 3: Service & Fun

After an eventful day of hard work painting the house and playing with kids, we treated ourselves to Dairy Queen and a local baseball game. In search of the famed Nicollet Tower, we drove around for 40 minutes through Sisseton and its neighboring city Agency. Once we finally arrived, we found that the drive was worth the detour. After climbing about 15 flights of stairs, we got to the top, and we could see North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. Looking forward to more adventure-filled days!

DAY 4: Hard at Work

Today, we were very excited to be able to finish our work painting Mary's house. Things got a little dicey when Ms. Shea and Vivian had to get on the roof to paint the last section, but luckily they were able to get the job done. Kids' Club was once again hard at work all day giving piggyback rides. After a full day, the entire group headed out to hike in the infamous Sica Hollow State Park. We can't wait for our last full day tomorrow!
