Hydration station offers new way to refuel
While the new drinking system at BSM may sound like a School House Rock commercial, according to those who use the hydration station, it is rocking this school. A group of senior high boys agree, with one proclaiming, “It is one of the best things to happen here.”
Situated near the vending machines in the cafeteria, a small counter supports two jugs of water and paper cups for students, faculty and staff to get drinks throughout the school day.
Lynn Lynch, BSM’s cafeteria manager for Taher (BSM’s food service company), says that the not only does a hydration station align with BSM’s new Wellness Program initiatives, it offers an economical solution (this is free, rather than students buying bottled water) and it’s a push for the environmental efforts of going green. Lynn explains that Taher is selling approximately 50-60 fewer drinks (water, juices, etc.) each day since the introduction of the hydration station this year.
“So far it’s been good,” says Lynn. “Kids love it.” If the lines to use the station are any indication, she’s right. Senior Ben Rosengren says, “I go out of my way to come here.”
The water is simply taken directly from the cafeteria kitchen faucet, being chilled, if possible, before being poured into the dispensers. Taher is experimenting with flavors, with the water with the fresh strawberries bobbing in it receiving high praise.
Senior Paul Kretsch is sold on the system, believing it is an easier, faster way for refilling cups and bottles. “It stays colder than the water fountain,” he says and shares that he drinks more water during lunch now too.
