Common Basket: Safe Families for Children

Screenshot_612.pngA few weeks ago, we began the Lenten season with our Ash Wednesday Mass. As a way to prepare for these next 40 days, all students, faculty and staff had the chance to write a Lenten Resolution which as a personal commitment to grow throughout the weeks ahead. After the resolutions were collected they were burned with palms from last Palm Sunday to use at Mass. “This is a beautiful symbol of how each of us is here to support each other in faith and in growth to be the people that God created us to be,” said Mike Jeremiah.

The students left Mass with a small prayer card that included a special Lenten prayer on one side and our Scripture Theme for the year on the other. The card is a reminder that Lent is not about what we regret but what we can do differently to live out God’s love and word.

With the start of the Lenten season, it was the perfect opportunity to introduce the newest Common Basket. Peyton (’17) and Grace (’20) Melin sponsored this Common Basket with all proceeds going to Safe Families for Children. Safe Families for Children provides breathing room and support for parents in crisis, giving them time to get back on their feet while their children are cared for in a safe and loving environment.

In the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday, Peyton and Grace made presentations on the organization for a number of classes in the junior and senior highs.

A Note from Peyton and Grace Melin:

One of the things that makes Safe Families for Children such an important organization is that it is a local organization. These families that need help are right here, and we would never have known there was such a need in our community without an organization like Safe Families. This is something that students at BSM can really cling on to - knowing they are making a real difference in people’s lives right hear in the Twin Cities.

The Common Basket is an amazing opportunity here at BSM. The money that comes from the Common Basket is important, especially to organizations like Safe Families for Children who do not receive government funding for all their chapters. However, the money isn’t everything. Through the Common Basket, students at BSM are able to spread the word about an organization that is important to them, and making those connections is essential to an organization being able to achieve their mission.

We hope Safe Families for Children uses the money from this Common Basket to continue helping those in need. We also hope our presentations at school encourage others to get involved with their work.

At BSM, many of us have the means to help. We have resources like time, money and connections. This means that we have the ability to serve, and since BSM is a Catholic school, we are called (almost required!) to help others in need through the Bible. In Luke 12:48 it says, “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required.” We think BSM could really do something great for Safe Families if everyone takes this to heart.

The Common Basket was a success, raising nearly $1,300 at the Ash Wednesday Mass. We are grateful for the contributions of the entire BSM community and hope it does a lot of good for Safe Families. #BSMProud
