BSM mourns loss of Doris Christensen

December 13, 2011

The BSM community is sad to report the death of long-time employee and friend Doris Christensen. Doris began working in the school cafeteria in September 1963. In the 90s, she made a switch to the maintenance department and could often be seen with a dust rag in her hand and a smile on her face. Staff member Mary Neraasen sincerely states, “She was the nicest lady I ever met. Every conversation she had with you was always about you, not her.”

Doris had a morning shift during the past several years, and was often one of the first people to offer a warm “good morning” to Red Knight workers. Later each morning, it was customary for her to meet up with her good friend, Betty Rosenow. Betty has worked in BSM’s cafeteria for 50 years now, and the two “Bobbsey twins,” as they used to refer to themselves, took their morning break together and caught up on their lives.

Doris2010.gifDoris began having medical challenges last winter, suffering from a fall and eventually a series of strokes. Whenever possible, she would resume her work duties—at whatever pace was possible—because she so thoroughly enjoyed her time spent at BSM.

Her most recent stroke over Thanksgiving break, however, resulted in hospice care. She passed away December 10, just a little more than a week shy of her 86th birthday.

The loss will be deeply felt by all those she encountered at BSM. School president Dr. Bob Tift often commented on Doris’ unconditional love and acceptance of everyone with whom she interacted. She was like a grandmother to many, and as Dr. Tift adds, “She will be greatly missed.”

On Saturday, December 17, Doris' family will begin receiving guests at 1 p.m. at the entrance of BSM's Great Hall. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m., in the Great Hall.

Upon the family's request, memorials preferred to the Doris Christensen Fund to be established at BSM. Questions regarding this fund may be directed to Richard Olson, rolson@BSMschool.org or 952-915-4351.
