Boys’ soccer claims state title, girls finish as runners up

November 3, 2011

With both the boys' and girls' varsity soccer teams playing for state championships, hundreds of Red Knight fans spent Thursday at the Metrodome.

The boys played first, starting at 10 a.m. A well-matched first half against Prairie Seeds Academy resulted in a 1-1 tie for the break. Jake Horton scored for BSM, with an assist from Dan Lundberg. Carter Eckerline put in the second ball for the Red Knights. Then a goal by Johnny Mulvahill, assisted by Brendan Schember, sealed it for BSM. Coach Dave Platt said of his winning team, "I'm just very proud of them. They worked hard and played our game. I'm especially happy for our seniors who have been working at this for a long time."

This is the BSM boys’ soccer program’s fifth state title. In 2000, Coach Platt and his wife were expecting their first child, Emily, who was born just days after the championship game. In 2003, their son, Luca, came into the world during soccer season, a few weeks before Dome Days. In 2006, baby Charlie found the target, being born at 8:23 a.m., with a championship game scheduled for 10 a.m. Coach Platt made it to the Dome from the hospital in time to coach the second half. The first title win was in 1997, the year then-Assistant-Coach-Platt and his wife, Megan, were married. This year’s team needed no major life changes from the Platt family.

The girls fought hard in their 12:30 p.m. game against Blake.  The Bears scored just prior to halftime, and no second-half goals led to a 1-0 ending.

Boys named to the All-Tournament Team were Paul Graupner, Jake Horton, Johnny Mulvahill and Brendan Schember. All-Tournament girls included Dana Buckhorn, Mikayla Coulombe, Kelly Pannek and Peggy Renier.
