Scott Smith
Varsity/JV Dive Coach
Scott Smith has been jumping off high places since he was 7-years-old and living in La Crosse, Wisc. Then, the fearless first grader could be found diving into the Black River from houseboat’s roofs. Fast forward almost forty years later and Smith frequently makes the leap off the 10-meter platform competing regularly in the senior and master’s division for USA Diving. The 45-year-old coach holds 17 master’s national titles, three world titles and two world records. Last year, Smith grabbed two gold and three silver medals at USA Diving’s Master’s Nationals in Los Angeles. Smith was also the 1983 Wisconsin State Diving Champion, earning a diving scholarship to the University of Iowa.
 
Smith moved to the Twin Cities in 1989 and coached the Twin City Divers and Minnesota Diving Academy. He has coached at least 14 boys and girls high school teams throughout the Twin Cities. From 1993 to 2003, Smith also served as assistant coach to the Mission Viejo Nadadores in Mission Viejo, Calif. While in California, Smith’s team won 10 indoor and 12 outdoor national team titles and produced 24 national champions and four world champions.  In his nearly 25 years of coaching, Smith has coached numerous state, national and international diving champions.
 
In June 2010, Smith and a handful of divers started Bounce Diving Club. Five divers from that club qualified for USA Diving’s and AAU National Meets last summer.  Smith believes in developing not only the technical side of a diver but also the whole diver. “I enjoy coaching kids,” said Smith. “But diving is only part of what makes each and every child unique. For me coaching is about developing my divers to be the best they can be – on and off the board.”
