A Catholic, college-preparatory school, grades 7-12

Orchestra at BSM is available as both a curricular and extracurricular activity, with a variety of performance opportunities for string players at all levels.

String Orchestra is offered to 7th and 8th grade students who play violin, viola, cello, or upright acoustic bass. The class meets every other day during the regular school day for credit and serves to meet the requirement for junior high. Participants are required to perform in one concert each semester and at most all-school Mass services. Advanced string players are also invited to rehearse and perform with the High School Orchestra in addition to Junior High Orchestra if they wish.

For ½ credit per semester or extracurricular
High School Orchestra is offered to high school students who play violin, viola, cello, or upright acoustic bass and meets once a week (usually Fridays) in the morning before school.

Students taking Orchestra for credit are also required to attend one sectional per week with members of their section (violin viola, cello, bass) as arranged with the teacher and to participate in all performances. Students will receive ½ credit per semester, which goes toward completing the Fine Arts requirement.

Students participating in Orchestra as an extracurricular activity are not required to attend the weekly sectional but are invited if they are in need of extra assistance. They are, however, required to attend the weekly morning rehearsal and to participate in all performances.

The orchestra performs at most all-school Masses and gives one full concert per semester.

Non-credit for advanced players
The BSM Chamber Orchestra is an extracurricular ensemble offered to advanced players of stringed instruments. All members of Chamber Orchestra must be currently enrolled in High School Orchestra for credit in order to participate.

The Chamber Orchestra meets for one hour after school one day a week (usually Fridays) and performs light classics, to pop, to professional level classical Chamber Orchestra repertoire. This ensemble is designed to challenge our most advanced players, and the group can be seen performing at numerous venues throughout the community, bedecked in their black tuxedos and formal gowns.

The Chamber Orchestra focuses its performance on community service and performs on the average once per month. Some of our performances have included BSM Open Houses, Senior Citizens Centers, the Salvation Army City Wide Holiday Kick-off (featured on radio and television), special worship services for BSM donors and alums, Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda during Non-public Schools Week, Empty Bowls Fundraiser, and Community Christmas Caroling.

The BSM Chamber Orchestra is a service-oriented performing ensemble; participants may use community performance time to count toward service hours.
