History Club

The BSM Chapter of the National History Club was named one of the TOP TEN CHAPTERS for the 2010-2011 school year by the National History Club.

The National History Club was founded in March 2002 to promote the reading, writing, discussion, and enjoyment of history. There are currently chapters in thirty-six states and two foreign countries, and there are over 4,600 students involved.  The history club is open to students in grades 9-12 and meets once a month.

In fall of 2004, BSM began a National History Club chapter. BSM was the second chapter to form in the state of Minnesota.

During the 2004-2005 school year, the chapter read and discussed the book Gates of Fire by Stephen Pressfield, which is on the battle of Thermopylae. This battle took place in Greece in 480 B.C.E., and saw 300 Spartan knights and their allies face the enormous forces of Xerxes, King of Persia.  The club also invited the school to a showing of the movie Attila and designed t-shirts for members with the slogan "The History Club--Because No One Cares What's Happening Now."

In 2006-2007, the History Club showed the movie Joyeux Noel about the soldier driven Christmas Eve armistice in World War I.  In addtion, students read The Kitchen Boy about the final days of the last tsar of Russia and his family.

In 2008-2009, the BSM chapter attended the "Splendors of the Vatican" touring exhibit at the Minnesota Historical Society as well as explored the "Minnesota 150" exhibit.

In 2009-2010, the BSM chapter went on a tour of the Alexander Ramsey House - thei home of the first territorial governor in St. Paul.
