Kahnversations 2011-2012

All BSM parents are invited to attend one or more of the programs in Parenting KAHNversations. Led by BSM's school psychologist, Dr. Steve Kahn, this series consists of sessions specifically targeted toward parenting teenagers. Not only do these informal meetings provide useful parenting strategies, they also provide a great opportunity to connect with other BSM parents. Come to one or all sessions.  Bring your own lunch or help yourself to the snacks and refreshments provided. All meetings are held in the library conference room. Contacts: Laura Merriam ltmerriam@gmail.com or Betsy Wyvell betsyjim@q.com.

Junior High Kahnversations: Supporting Your Teenager
October 5, 2011, 1:45 - 2:30 p.m.
As our children begin junior high, they continue to need our help, but in a different way. Please join us to learn more from Dr. Kahn about how to continue to guide them while holding on to a long-term view of parenting.

Weekend Temptations
November 10, 2011, 8 - 9:30 a.m.
Dr. Kahn will share realistic examples about what BSM students do on weekends. Hear about “what parents did not do that they wish they had done,” and the advantages of being appropriately paranoid. Student survey results regarding risky behavior will be part of the discussion.

Preparing for the Ultimate Launch Date
January 11, 2012, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
They’re off and running…with driver’s licenses, jobs, ACT and SAT tests and college visits! What is the best parent role to help with college applications without adding stress to their lives and our relationships with our children? Only parents can teach children that their personal worth is not contingent upon getting accepted to a particular college.

Strengthening your Parenting Team
March 20, 2012, 8 - 9:30 a.m.
Parents often disagree about how to parent. Our children need us to have one unified approach to parenting. Many factors play a role: gender, working more at home or away from home, conflict resolution skills, how each parent was raised.

Senior Panel
April 17, 2012, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Annual panel presentation by BSM seniors. They will share their perspective on academic pressure, sports, college applications, dating, weekends, alcohol, drugs and getting along with parents. In the past, this has been the “can’t miss” program.
