Senior High Curriculum

 Health (S1) (S2)   

The health curriculum is designed to assist the students in making "healthy" choices. Topics of study include personal health, nutrition, mental health, substance abuse, stress management, physical fitness, body systems, marriage and family planning, as well as CPR.

One semester, one credit, required of all freshmen.

Emergency Response Part I (S1)  

This is an advanced level course in first aid designed for people who are the first to respond to a medical emergency. Emergency Medical Responders (formerly called First Responders) such as police officers, fire fighters, wilderness trip leaders, ski patrollers, athletic trainers, and lifeguards often receive this type of training. Students considering a career in medicine may find this course interesting and beneficial. Students will learn about the assessment of injuries and illnesses, such as respiratory emergencies and cardiac emergencies, shock, trauma, medical emergencies and environmental emergencies. Skills the students will learn include CPR and AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, use of supplemental oxygen and airway adjuncts, and bandaging and splinting. Upon successful competition of all skill checks, and scoring 80% or better on the final exam, students will receive certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Minnesota EMSRB First Responder.

Prerequisite: Health

One semester, one credit, open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Wilderness/Remote First Aid and Sports Injury Prevention and First Aid (S2)

This course deals with special circumstances in first aid. In the Wilderness and Remote First Aid section of the course, students will learn how to deal with emergencies in which professional help is an hour or more away. In the second part of the course, students will learn how to prevent and treat sports related injuries. Upon successful completion of all skill checks and scoring 80% or better on the written tests, students will receive certification in Wilderness and Remote First Aid, and Sports Injury Prevention and First Aid.

Prerequisite:  Emergency Response or current CPR certification.

One semester, one credit, open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

 Physical Education 9 (YR)

This is an activity-based course that involves instruction and participation in individual as well as team sports. The different team sports include but are not limited to speedball, flag football, volleyball, cricket and floor hockey. In addition, individual activities include weight training and conditioning, physical fitness testing, orienteering, heart rate monitor training and archery.

Two semesters, .5 credits per semester, required of all freshmen.

Wellness/PE 10 (YR)
  

Students participate in a wellness activity elective one day per week all year. Options include a variety of fitness programs, recreational games, outdoor activities, cooking and sports nutrition, relaxation and stress reduction, dance, woodworking and fiber arts. Wellness activities are also available to students on a drop-in basis during their BSM hour.

Two semesters, .5 credits per year, required of all sophomores.

Wellness/PE 11 (YR)

Juniors take a curriculum-based wellness class two days per week for one quarter. Students participate in a wellness activity elective one day per week for three quarters. Activity options include a variety of fitness programs, recreational games, outdoor activities, cooking and sports nutrition, relaxation and stress reduction, dance, woodworking and fiber arts. Wellness activities are also available to students on a drop-in basis during their BSM hour.

Two semesters, .5 credits per year, required of all juniors

Wellness/PE 12 (YR)

Seniors participate in a wellness activity elective one day per week all year. Options include a variety of fitness programs, recreational games, outdoor activities, cooking and sports nutrition, relaxation and stress reduction, dance, woodworking and fiber arts. Wellness activities are also available to students on a drop-in basis during their BSM hour.

Two semesters, .5 credits per year, required of all seniors.

Junior High Curriculum

Physical Education

The physical education program offers a wide variety of activities to assist students in developing interests and skills. The goal is to provide enjoyable activities in which the students can meet with success. Individual, team, lifetime, and fitness units are offered. The lessons focus on participation, fundamentals, sportsmanship, motor skills, and student interaction.

Year-long course, meets every other day, required of 7th and 8th graders.

Life Skills

The seventh grade life skills curriculum is intended to help students strengthen their communication and decision-making skills. Emphasis is on refusal skills, peer pressure, goal setting, and building self-confidence.

One semester course, meets every other day, required of 7th graders.
