
Guidance
The Senior High Benilde-St. Margaret’s Guidance department provides many services to students and parents. For more detailed information regarding all services provided, students and parents are encouraged to go to the Guidance/College & Career section of this Web site and select from the choices offered.
Academic Support (S1) (S2)
This course provides students the opportunity to receive academic support on an “as-needed” basis in a supervised study hall format.
One or two semesters, no credit given. Open to all students.
Career/College Planning (S2)
This workshop provides students the opportunity to make well-informed decisions regarding their future education and career. Components of the workshop include an all-day workshop on college and career planning, completion of a portfolio of work, and attendance at the BSM College Fair. During the all-day workshop , students will attend sessions on a variety of helpful topics to aid them in the college planning and application process. Each student is required to complete a portfolio of work building on the information they receive at the workshop. Students will be required to use computer programs and printed materials available in the guidance office and College and Career Center in order to complete their portfolio.
Students are required, parents are encouraged, to attend an individual meeting with their college counselor. This meeting will be scheduled by the guidance office during the spring of junior year.
One semester course, .5 credits, required of all juniors.
Learning Lab (S1) (S2)
Students have the opportunity to receive academic and organizational support in this study hall supervised by the learning specialist.
Prerequisite: Recommendation by parent or teacher and approval by special needs coordinator.
One or two semesters, .5 credits per semester, open to freshmen. Students will receive a P/NP notation on their academic transcript.
Teacher Assistant (S1) (S2)
Students have the opportunity to experience job responsibilities and earn credit by serving as an assistant to a teacher or staff member. Students may indicate a subject area in which they are interested. Students will receive a P/NP notation on their academic transcript. No more than 2 credits may count toward graduation requirements.
One semester, open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
.5 credit 1-4 days/week plus 6 graded courses
1 credit 5 days/week plus 6 graded courses
Think, Learn, Communicate (TLC) (S1) (S2)
This personal development course is designed to lead ninth grade students through the three essential strategies for self-discovery:
Thinking-expand your comfort zone, monitor your moods and attitudes, develop emotional intelligence,
Learning-listening, organization, goal-setting, eliminate distractions, develop study skills
Communication-non-verbal, conflict-resolution, how to help when necessary.
The goal of the course is to empower students to reach their full potential and find more personal and academic success in high school and beyond. The course is designed to reach students of all ability levels.
One semester course, 1 credit, open to freshmen.
