Guidance

Academic Support (S1) (S2)


This course provides students the opportunity to receive academic and organizational support in a supervised study hall format. This class supports students with a documented diagnosis that affects their ability to perform in a school setting.

One or two semesters, no credit, open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Career/College Planning (S2)

This workshop provides students the opportunity to make well-informed decisions regarding their future education and career. Components of the workshop include an all-day workshop on college and career planning, completion of a portfolio of work, and attendance at the BSM College Fair. During the all-day workshop, students will attend sessions on a variety of helpful topics to aid them in the college planning and application process. Each student is required to complete a portfolio of work building on the information they receive at the workshop. Students will be required to use online resources and printed materials available in the guidance office and College and Career Center in order to complete their portfolio. Students are required (parents are encouraged) to attend an individual meeting with their college counselor. This meeting will be scheduled by the guidance office during the spring of junior year.

One semester course, .5 credits, required of all juniors.

Learning Lab (S1) (S2)

Students have the opportunity to receive academic and organizational support in this study hall supervised by the learning specialist. Students will receive a P (pass)/NP (no pass) notation on their academic transcript. This class supports students with a documented diagnosis that affects their ability to perform in a school setting.

One or two semesters, .5 credits per semester, open to freshmen.

Teacher Assistant (S1) (S2)

Students have the opportunity to experience job responsibilities and earn credit by serving as an assistant to a teacher or staff member. Students may indicate a subject area in which they are interested. Students will receive a P/NP notation on their academic transcript. No more than 2 credits may count toward graduation requirements.

One semester, open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

.5 credit 1-4 days/week plus 7 graded courses

1 credit 5 days/week plus 7 graded courses

Think, Learn, Communicate (TLC) (S1) (S2)

This course focuses on personal development and is designed to empower the student to reach their full potential in high school and beyond by teaching students how to improve self confidence, relationships with family and friends, and academics. Specifically, the course includes three essential strategies for self discovery:

  1. Thinking-Taking healthy risks, monitoring moods, attitudes and emotional IQ;
  2. Learning-improving organization, goal setting, decision making, eliminating distractions, and developing study skills;
  3. Communication-improving listening assertiveness and conflict resolution skills. 

This is a great course for students to meet other students as there is a great deal of self reflection and class discussion. 

One semester course, one credit, open to freshmen.
