As the premier Catholic college-preparatory in the Twin Cities, Benilde-St. Margaret’s (BSM) seeks to recognize and encourage the entire BSM Community’s active participation in social media, online (web) and traditional (print) communications. 

The below policies and guidelines are designed to assist the BSM Community in making responsible decisions when creating, posting or otherwise contributing to blogs, social networks, wikis, virtual worlds or other social media outlets or print pieces. Whether using external sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest or Wikipedia or internal sites – or comment on blogs or any form of digital media or print media – these guidelines apply to all i.e. students, faculty and staff, Parents Association members, etc.

Policies and guidelines are based upon (but not limited to) the following principles and apply to the professional use of all digital or print media on behalf of the school (includes any Associations, Clubs, Teams etc. associated with BSM) as well as personal use.

  • Adhere to schools “Code of Conduct” and “Belief Statements”
  • Use common sense and good judgment
  • Be respectful, sensible, fair and courteous and avoid using statements, photos, video or audio that reasonably could be viewed as malicious, obscene, threatening or intimidating, that disparage students, parents, staff and faculty, vendors or suppliers, or that might constitute harassment or bullying. Examples of this type of conduct might include offensive posts meant to intentionally harm someone’s reputation or posts that could contribute to a hostile school environment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex/gender (including pregnancy), gender identity and expression, national origin, disability, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship status, Veteran status or any other classification protected by applicable law, rules or regulations.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of school business and proprietary information
  • Students, staff and faculty and other groups associated with the school should not speak on the schools behalf unless specifically authorized to do so
  • Respect intellectual property rights
  • Minimize security risks
